Former educator Garth Andersen has seen firsthand the importance a solid start in school gives children of all backgrounds. Without basic math and reading skills, kids can fall behind quickly – and that leads to lifelong impacts on entire communities. At St. Paul, Minnesota’s East Side Learning Center, a nonprofit that offers free one-on-one tutoring to kids in kindergarten through third grade, Garth is using his experience as an educator and his passion for the organization’s mission to help tutor young children in reading programs throughout the school. A OneCard administrator at Deluxe, Andersen also is a board member at the East Side Learning Center, which serves a historically depressed area of Minnesota’s capital city, and he saw an opportunity to use his 100 Hours allotment to make a day-to-day difference in kids’ lives.
